  1. DEFEND THE MAGDEGBURG OIL REFINERY
  2.  
  3. Synthetic fuel production was a crucial
  4. resource for the Nazi war machine.  As
  5. such, installations involved in the
  6. refinement process were often the
  7. target of Allied bombing raids.  Some
  8. of the worst flak and most intense air
  9. combat experienced by Eighth AF pilots
  10. and crews occured on missions where
  11. German oil was the objective.
  12.  
  13. The Me 163B Komet's introduction to
  14. combat service in July, 1944, gave the 
  15. Luftwaffe a new, if somewhat impractical, 
  16. high altitude interceptor.  As the first 
  17. operational rocket fighter Staffel, 
  18. 1./JG 400 was pressed into service to
  19. help the Luftwaffe guard Germany's 
  20. synthetic fuel factories from Magdeburg
  21. to Leuna.

  23.                     YOUR MISSION

  25. Based at Quedlinburg airfield, south of
  26. Magdeburg, your squadron gets the 
  27. scramble order to intercept American 
  28. bombers approaching the oil refineries 
  29. there.  Unfortunately, a pair of
  30. Mustangs is closing on your airfield
  31. even as you jump into the cockpit of
  32. your Komet.  Get airborne quickly and
  33. dispatch the P-51s. Then climb to an
  34. altitude of approximately 30,000 feet,
  35. where you can make a power-off glide
  36. toward your vectored intercept point
  37. with the bombers.
